Item Description
Jelly's Last Jam opened at Virginia Theatre (now the August Wilson Theatre) on April 26, 1992, running for 569 performances. This landmark musical, directed by George C. Wolfe (who also wrote the book) created a sensation at the end of the 1992 season garnering critical and popular acclaim for its stars Gregory Hines, Tonya Pinkins, Keith David, Savion Glover and its extraordinary cast.
Jelly's Last Jam is based on the life and musical career of Ferdinand Joseph LeMothe, better known as Jelly Roll Morton and regarded as one of the brilliant composer/musicians to introduce jazz to the American public.
Jelly's Last Jam was nominated for 11 Tony Awards, including Best Musical, winning for its lead performers, Hines and Pinkins, and a third for legendary Jules Fisher for Best Lighting Design.
This is one of Fishers nine Tony Awards. He also won for Assassins; Bring in da Noise, Bring in da Funk; Grand Hotel; Dancin' ; Pippin; The Will Rogers Follies and, most recently, Lucky Guy starring Tom Hanks. Fisher has designed the lighting for more than 100 Broadway plays and musicals.
Today we are honored to offer to you his engraved Tony Award for Jelly's Last Jam. We are deeply grateful to Jules Fisher for this extraordinary gift and donation.
