Item Description

Dancing Bass |  A striped bass couple caught dancing on an enchanted beach to music only they can hear.

Artist: Leo Convery

I am a 91-year-old Island native, born in the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on May 14, 1933. My parents owned and operated the Harborside Inn. In that atmosphere there were always things needing repair, so I grew up learning how to use tools. My father set up a small wood shop in the cellar of our home at age 10. There I learned how wood can be transformed into useful things. Growing up, owning homes, and building homes around the Island I learned more about woodworking. I married an Artist we had a daughter who became an art teacher, so Art and Art expressions became a strong influence at home. In the 1970’s I built a home with a great shop and now had space to get into serious carving and the tools needed to do it.

My first serious piece was a full-size striped bass, the second a Blue Fish and since then I have turned out a stream of birds, fish and signs, Mermaids, and, carved pumpkins, Sharks, Swordfish, a full-size with wings up, Osprey, small Chickadees, shore birds, Spirit bird houses and more. Going way back, When my son was 16 we built a working hovercraft as a father-son project and when my grandsons were about the same age we built a working Trebuchet to launch mangos into the lake behind their home in Florida.

Most of my carvings have gone to family and friends, not for sale. Last year was my first entry for the Bass in the Grass sale. I called it “schoolies”, a large bass with little schoolie bass swimming over the big one. This year's entry is a bit more frivolous; I call it the “Dancing Bass” a bass couple caught on the shore in a magic moment dancing to music only they can hear!

This is an opportunity to get one of my carvings, it is carved out of Azek, a weatherproof material that will not rot, and it can be hung outdoors or indoors.
It is for a great cause so go for it! You will get a free copy of my carvings book too.
