Item Description

This Hawaiian umeke kepa kepa (bowl with horizontal flat panels) style milo bowl turned from a branch cut from a stately tree that grows in Wailua in Keith Arakaki’s yard is 7” in diameter and stands 3” in height. An endemic Hawaiian hardwood, milo is well known and sought after by local wood carvers for its colors, figure and grain variations. The rich dark browns and reds along with light gold sap wood reveal a bowl which invites you to cherish it in your hands.

The heart of the master is felt in every stroke onto the wood.

Ray Nitta is a wood craftsman and artisan residing in Kekaha, Kauai. An erstwhile teacher, he is still active in enrichment programs at various schools on the west side of the island. He has exhibited his work internationally. Ray is a board member of Lawai International Center.

There is a wonderful article about Westside Woodworks by Margaret A. Haapoja in the January 6, 2014 issue of Green Magazine Hawaii.
